O mio babbino caro
from Gianni Schicchi, Giacomo Pucinni (1858-1924)
From Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi, O mio babbino caro has always been a crowd favorite.
In this aria, Lauretta pleads with her father to re-write Buoso's will to help her boyfriend Rinuccio. She attempts every form of persuasion and even threatens to kill herself if her father doesn't do what she wishes.
It was an honor to bring this aria to the Miss Texas stage in 2021 and bring a little bit of opera to a new audience.
This collection of fifteen short songs for voice and piano was published after Bellini’s death in 1835, and these pieces are not part of a larger work or set. Each of these three songs explores one’s reaction to lost love.
The first piece deals with unrequited love. The singer tries to convince their lover of their devotion, but it doesn’t matter because they were never loved back.
Next, one of Bellini’s more operatic pieces from Quindici composizioni da camera. L’abbandono is also found in the unpublished opera Ernani, which explains it’s operatic flair. Here we see a more forlorn lover, who asks the breeze and the bees to help bring her love back to her.
Bellini’s Dolente immagine di Fille mia tells the story of a lover still faithful to the one he has lost. Despite the tragedy of death, this piece reminds us that those of us left behind will always love and honor the ones we’ve lost.
